The Flambeau River is one of the few remaining "white water" streams and is widly known as an excellent canoe trail and one of the best white water trips in the Midwest. The name Flambeau means "flaming torch." This name came into being in the 1600's after early French explorers came upon Indians fishing the river at night with the aid of firebrands held aloft on sticks.
