Canoeing in the Park Falls Area is some of the best you will find. Our many lakes offer a peaceful, quiet opportunity to enjoy your canoeing. For the more adventurous, the Flambeau River has a reputation for excellent whitewater canoeing. However, the two forks of this river give ample opportunity for canoeing enjoyment for both the novice and expert.

The Flambeau River is one of the few remaining "white water" streams and is widly known as an excellent canoe trail and one of the best white water trips in the Midwest. The name Flambeau means "flaming torch." This name came into being in the 1600's after early French explorers came upon Indians fishing the river at night with the aid of firebrands held aloft on sticks.
For the canoeist, from the city of Park Falls to the Big Falls Dam, the North Fork and a short stretch of the main branch of the Flambeau River offer a good combination of Class 1 and 2 rapids and long stretches of flat water. It's the perfect mix for novice and intermediate whitewater canoeists, who mostly focus on the scenic and rough-and-tuble stretches of the North Fork. Some canoeists start as far north as the Turtle Flambeau Flowage and run more than a hundred miles to Beaver Dam Rapids.
The wild and beautiful Middle Flambeau begins near Nine Mile Creek. For about 50 miles, the river flows entirely within the Flambeau State Forest. The land along the river is deliberately managed to preserve and enhance its wilderness appeal. People from all over the United States have traveled the Flambeau and acclaimed it as one of this nation's finest canoeing rivers.
The Forks, where the north and south branches of the Flambeau join, has remained unchanged by man and provides the challenge of rapids and whitewater. With the exception of a few summer cabins, the river is undeveloped and remote. Canoeists use established campsites that are accessible only by boat and are located at regular intervals. Established landings for starting and take-out points are: Turtle Flambeau Dam, Holt's Landing, Agenda Landing, Blanchard's Landing, Upper Dam Park Falls, Lower Dam Park Falls, Pixley Dam, Crowley Dam, Nine Mile Creek on State Highway 70, Dead Man's Slough of Highway 70, Oxbo Resort Landing/Dix-Dox Landing on Highway 70, the bridge crossing on County Trunk "W" at the Flambeau River State Headquarters, and Camp 41 and Beaver Dam Landing.
