Hunting in the Park Falls area is sure to provide you with a rewarding experience. Our large area of public lands with low competition from other hunters offers the ideal hunting conditions. Park Falls boasts the most habitat for ruffed grouse anywhere! As "The Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World" this is definitely the place for hunting. Many miles of hunting trails are seeded and mowed and are gated to prohibit motorized use. These are in the heart of the best habitat areas.
The Park Falls area is ideal black bear habitat. Many acres of public lands are open to hunting for the hunter who prefers using dogs or those who prefer using bait stations. Both types of hunters have had excellent results as our abundance of good habitat contributes to a large bear population.
For exceptional deer hunting conditions, Park Falls is the place, with a large deer population per square mile. Hunter usage per square mile is low due to the large amount of public lands available therefore giving you a better than average chance of bagging your trophy.
Hunter Walking and Hiking Trails
Hiking through the northwoods in any season is a refreshing experience. We are privileged to have many trails on public lands to provide opportunities to hunt ruffed grouse and other game or to just walk in the woods without being met by motorized vehicles. Many of these trails are old logging roads that have been seeded with clover, mowed to keep them from becoming over-grown, and scattered with openings to create an improved habitat for wildlife. In most cases parking is provided at the trail entrances, which have gates placed on them to prevent vehicles from coming on the path. The Flambeau River Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society has been working with county, state, and federal agencies to establish and manage a broad network of trails in the forest surrounding Park Falls. The Price County Forestry Department maintains about 35 miles of Hunter Walking Trails in six different areas with about 30 wildlife openings along the trails.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had developed about 15 miles of trails in the Hoffman Lake Wildlife Area and several miles on the Kimberly-Clark Wildlife Area. A number of trails are also maintained in the Flambeau River State Forest. Over 2,500 acres of the Chequamegon National Forest are managed as desirable wildlife habitat with 40 areas designated as hunter walking areas during the ruffed grouse season.
The Park Falls area has good reason to claim the title of "Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World!"
The 800,000 acre Chequamegon National Forest is located within five minutes of Park Falls.

WILDLIFE
Quality outdoor recreation experiences abound on the vast acreage of public lands in the Park Falls area providing opportunities free of competition from large numbers of users. This is one of our prime attractions.
The Park Falls vicinity has two state wildlife areas. The 12,000 acre Hoffman Lake-Hay Creek Wildlife Area to the northeast, managed to improve habitat for the popular ruffed grouse as well as deer and black bear. And, the 8,000 acre Kimberly Clark Wildlife Area to the southwest, managed specifically to create quality habitat for the uncommon sharptail grouse. If numbers cannot warrant hunting, it will offer an opportunity to view this species during its unique spring breeding and dancing behavior.
Park Falls has the most extensively managed ruffed grouse habitat in the world. Good grouse areas also benefit other wildlife including deer, bear, rabbits and song birds. Our wildlife resource values are not usually expressed in economic terms. The area has long been attractive for its older, larger antlered, trophy deer. More recently, the ruffed grouse and black bear have taken on more prestige. Our area offers prime habitat for these species. Bald eagles are commonplace and can be readily seen throughout the summer and fall. One breeding eagle territory has been in place for over 30 years in the Hoffman Lake-Hay Creek Wildlife Area. Eagles, osprey, otter, deer, ducks and an occasional loon and fisher can be seen when floating the wild Flambeau River adjacent to the area.
Wolves, bobcats and pine martins inhabit the more remote areas of our public forests. Wildlife enthusiasts occasionally obtain are glimpses of these secretive animals. Our public lands are managed for a diversity of wildlife species, and your enjoyment. |
